Wakenya United began with a conversation.
A friend shared how much they missed being around their people — speaking their language, sharing familiar experiences, and simply feeling connected to their culture. That feeling of being away from home and disconnected from community was something many of us understood.
So, we decided to do something about it.
We gathered for our very first Friendsgiving, a simple potluck centered around good food, familiar faces, culture, and connection. We didn't know it at the time, but that gathering would become the beginning of Wakenya United.
For the past five years, we have continued to curate experiences that respond to the needs, interests, and realities of our community. From cultural celebrations and social gatherings to conversations, wellness experiences, dating events, fundraisers, and community initiatives, our events may look different, but they are all rooted in the same purpose:
To serve our community, honor our culture, and foster genuine connection.

Agnes Mburu is a community builder, cultural advocate, and the Director of Wakenya United. Driven by a deep commitment to connection and community, Agnes helps create meaningful spaces where people can celebrate culture, build relationships, and feel a sense of belonging. Through Wakenya United, she continues to bring people together and grow a community rooted in culture, connection, and unity.
